In Georgia, the Food Stamp Program is administered through the Department of Human Service’s Division of Family and Children Services. This federally funded program provides monthly benefits to low-income households to help buy food. Anyone may apply for food stamp benefits, though the program is designed for those with limited income and resources. In order to apply, you have two options. The easiest way to apply for food stamp benefits is online. The other option is to apply at a DFCS office in your county. Offices are typically open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. To find your local office, click here. Simply download the application, fill it out and return it to your local office.
Once your application is filed, you will be contacted for an interview with a staff person from DFCS. During the interview, you will have to present verification of income, resources and residency with documents such as a birth certificate, drivers license, Social Security Number, pay stubs and mortgage statements. The law mandates that your application must be processed and benefits made available within 30 days from the date the application is filed. The amount of benefits you receive is dependent upon household size and income. Your benefits are issued each month through your Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) account. Your EBT account acts as a normal debit account. When you make food purchases, simply swipe the card and enter your PIN.
1. When are benefits credited to my EBT account?
Benefits are credited to your EBT account from the fifth through the 23rd of each month.
2. How can I check my balance of my EBT account?
To check your balance, simply log onto their website and enter your card information. You can also review your transaction history, change your PIN or contact Customer Service.
3. What items cannot be purchased with food stamp benefits?
Federal law prohibits the use of food stamp benefits to purchase alcoholic beverages, cigarettes or tobacco, household supplies, medicines, vitamins, pet foods or non-food items.
4. How long do you get food stamp benefits?
If eligible, you can receive food stamp benefits for one month to one year. After that, you must reapply to continue receiving benefits.
